The Famous: A Steak House for Celebrations

The Famous is where you go if you have a special occasion to celebrate, if you need to kick back over a meal and have the bucks to go big, or if you simply want to check out one of Colorado Springs's most well-known names in steak. Leather booths envelope you as you dig in to a big slab of prime rib and sip your cocktail. The Famous's food and ambience have led multiple awards from local papers. The Gazette called it "Best Steakhouse," the place that offered the "Best Fine Dining," and the site of the "Best Martini." No lunchtime slouch, The Famous was also chosen by the Colorado Springs Independent as the home of the "Best Place to Grab a Burger for Lunch." Meals are accompanied with Caesar salad and range from — yup you guessed it — all kinds of steaks including New York Strip, Filet Mignon, or Colorado “All Natural” Ribeye Steak. The Famous offers a range of toppings such as Maryland crabmeat and jumbo shrimp. Those thinking beyond beef can dive into a tuna steak, try a coldwater lobster tail, or corral a Colorado rack of lamb.

Uchenna: Ethiopian Cuisine in Colorado Springs

Uchenna is a delightful Ethiopian restaurant in Colorado Springs run by a sweet Ethopian woman, Maya. Uchenna's exceptional website explains the history of Ethiopian cuisine as well as a bit about her own roots. The restaurant, though new, has been reeling in the awards from both the Colorado Springs Independent and the Gazette. What’s so great about Uchenna? Start with sweet and lovely drinks—lemonade with rosewater, or ice tea with orangewater—then sample the flat, pancake-like sourdough bread made from teff (a fine grain about the size of a poppy seed) that's used to complement many of the spicy staple dishes of Ethiopia. Gluten-intolerant individuals as well as curious epicureans are all fans of this new-to-the-West spin on leavened bread. Many Ethiopian dishes are made from lentils and other legumes, making for unique flavors and presentations!

Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum: Pike’s Peak History Heaven

The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum on Tejon Street exists to teach visitors about the history and culture of the Pike’s Peak region. Boasting free admission, the Pioneers Museum actually is the focal point of the Colorado Springs’s downtown and is as aesthetically pleasing as it gets, sitting in a sea of green lawns and complemented by a granite fountain that warmly welcomes visitors. Exhibits at the museum herself change constantly, varying from focus on Western art to antique quilts to Native American culture to space exploration’s special ties to the area. There’s also lots of information about pop culture ranging from juke boxes to motorcycles to baseball memorabilia. Pottery from the famous Van Briggle collection has also been displayed here, in addition to a portion of author Helen Hunt Jackson’s house.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo: High Altitude Animals

Zoos can be located in a wide variety of climates and environments—modern science can make it possible for captive animals to live just about anywhere—but for some reason there are only two mountain zoos in the entire United States. The Cheyenne Mt. Zoo, established in 1926 by tycoon Spencer Penrose, was originally intended to house his exotic animal collection before being handed over to the town of Colorado Springs. Visitors rave about the exhibits, which encourage interactivity with the diverse animal population. The Cheyenne Mt. Zoo is world-famous for its herd of reticulated giraffes—these majestic animals thrive in the Colorado climate, and the herd is the largest in captivity in the United States. It’s a thrill to have the opportunity to feed them snacks provided by zoo workers. There are also some animals you will see at few other zoos, including the slow-moving South American mountain tapir.
